Troubleshooting Disk Management
They work the same. One thing to note is sometimes the two can get out of sync. In that case you'll need to restart the logical disk management service and restart at least the GUI. I feel that the cli version is less likely to trip in that situation, but it's also been a while since I last managed to sufficiently break things. Sign up to join this community. Taking a disk offline in diskpart is the same as taking it offline in the management GUI. You may see different behavior based on the GUI having an open "session" to the offlined-disk that errors out, which is not a problem you'll encounter using disk part, or the PowerShell v4 cmdlets. You can select one or more or disks, or all of the disks to bring online. If you select all of the disks, then Oracle uses the ALL keyword for this operation. Otherwise, only the selected disks are affected by the online operation. During the online process, Oracle Enterprise Manager first places a disk into online mode to accommodate write operations.
Then Oracle Enterprise Manager resynchronizes stale data on the disk with the current data until the disk is fully online for read operations; this is the Oracle ASM fast mirror resync feature. You can also choose the By Failure Group view to perform this operation on a selected disk group. In this case, Oracle uses the SQL for disks in failure group.
You can also select a disk that is online, but Oracle Enterprise Manager ignores that selection and only brings disks online that were previously offline. Click Yes on the Oracle Enterprise Manager Confirmation dialog to begin bringing the disk online or click No to cancel the operation.
To take a disk offline, select the disk to take offline and click Offline.
"Offline" option is missing from Disk Management
If you bring a disk offline, then Oracle ASM performs the following:. Depending on how much data is stale, the operation may require additional time to complete. You can monitor the operation's progress using the Pending Operations link from the Disk Group home page.
The text on the page describes how the value of Rebalance Power affects the fast mirror resync operation. During the disk repair time period, you can repair the disks and then place them back online. For each disk that you successfully place online, the pending drop operation is canceled and a resynchronization operation begins. This is because the files in the disk group are protected with a lower degree of redundancy during this period.

Tell us about your experience with our site. I have the same question User Replied on September 16, Hello Sazzad, Thank you for posting your question on Microsoft community. We are recovering from a big ransomware issue where a client had their server and workstations encrypted.
This is not normally a massive problem, albeit takes a while to fix, because of the backups we have in place. However this particular time, it seemed as though somebody actively went onto the server and formatted the backup hard drive, as well as infecting the network. Since then we have been advising our clients to rotate backup hard drives and even delivering USB hard drives to some of them as we know they will never get around to it.
I'm just wondering at this point if anybody here has a solution or some software that we can schedule to take the USB hard drive offline right after the backup has completed? And then we want to automatically bring it back online for the next day's backup.
What do you think? I believe we found a script which we can implement within our backup software which will take it offline but we need something to bring it online if possible. Something that will do both would be great. I don't know of any software that can do this.
If you did manage to find a way to reliably automatically re-connect a USB drive for backup, what if you're hit by a virus during the backup? Also what's to stop an encryption virus bringing the drive back online with it's own method?
Moving to rotating USB drives is a solid move and will allow you to recover to the last offsite backup. Having password protected backup storage is better than USB for onsite backup. NAS storage, whereby the backup software is the only application that has saved credentials to write to the backup location no mapped drives setup to the backup, nothing an encryption virus can easily get into. Or a safer method is to call the backup files from the NAS or storage device so nothing on the network has the ability to access the backup files.
Additionally cloud storage is also worth considering which negates the need for manually rotating USB drives.
No, this is just one of many clients we do work for. So naturally we have experienced this a few times. This is the only time that caused a big problem for us, as normally we would have an image to work with and get them back on in a few hours. Seems the only alternative is to pay for external space in the cloud or to have the client rotate hard drives which is not going to happen. There's no reason you couldn't set that up to automatically enable a disk or disks on a calendar basis.

Bringing Disks Online and Offline
I am looking for the same thing for my clients. This topic has been locked by an administrator and is no longer open for commenting.
Read these nextApplies To: Windows 10, Windows 8. This topic lists a few common issues you may encounter when using Disk Management and troubleshooting steps to try. If you get an error or something doesn't work when following these procedures - don't panic!
This topic is just the first thing to try; there's also a ton of info on the Microsoft community site in the Files, folders, and storage section about the wide variety of hardware and software configurations you might be dealing with.
If you still need help, post a question there, or Contact Microsoft Support or the manufacturer of your hardware. Before we launch into the tricky stuff, here's an easy way to get to Disk Management in case you're not there already:. Cause: If you have a disk that doesn't appear in File Explorer and is listed in Disk Management as Not Initializedit could be because the disk doesn't have a valid disk signature.
Basically this means that the disk has never been initialized and formatted, or the drive formatting has become corrupted somehow. It's also possible that the disk is having hardware problems or issues plugging in, but we'll get to that in a few paragraphs. However, there's a good chance you've already tried this, and it didn't work. Or maybe you have a disk full of important files, and you don't want to erase the disk by initializing it.
There are a bunch of reasons a disk or memory card might be missing or fail to initialize, with a common reason being because the disk is failing. There's only so much you can do to fix a failing disk, but here are some steps to try to see if we can get it working again. If the disk works after one of these steps, don't bother with the next steps, just kick back, celebrate, and maybe update your backups.
Look at the disk in Disk Management. If it appears Offline as shown here, try right-clicking it and selecting Online.
If the disk appears in Disk Management as Onlineand has a primary partition that's listed as Healthyas shown here, that's a good sign. These partitions are full of really important files your PC needs to operate properly.
It's best to just leave them alone to do their jobs starting your PC and helping you recover from problems. Shut down your PC, turn off your external hard disk if it's an external disk with a power cordand then turn your PC and the disk back on. Sometimes USB disks don't get enough power from some ports, or have other issues with particular ports. This is especially common with USB hubs, but sometimes there are differences between ports on a PC, so try a few different ports if you have them.
Try a different cable. It might sound crazy, but cables fail a lot, so try using a different cable to plug the disk in. If you have an internal disk in a desktop PC, you'll probably need to shut your PC down before switching cables - see your PC's manual for details. Check Device Manager for issues. Select and hold or right-click the Start button, then select Device Manager from the context menu.
Look for any devices with an exclamation point next to it or other issues, double-click the device and then read its status. If the disk doesn't work on another PC, it's a good sign that there's something bad going on with the disk, and not your PC. No fun, we know. There are some more steps you can try in External USB drive error "You must initialize the disk before Logical Disk Manager can access it"but it might be time to search for and ask for help at the Microsoft community site, or contact your disk manufacturer or Microsoft Support.
If you just can't get it working, there are also apps that can try to recover data from a failing disk, or if the files are really important, you can pay a data recovery lab to try to recover them. If you find something that works for you, let us know in the comments section below.
Disks fail pretty often, so it's important to regularly backup any files you care about. If you have a disk that sometimes doesn't appear or gives errors, consider this a reminder to double-check your backup methods. It's OK if you're a little behind - we've all been there.
