Due to the extraordinary circumstances surrounding COVID, some of the remedies identified in recall press releases may not be available at this time.
Consumers should check with recalling firms for further details. It is important to remember that CPSC and recalling firms urge consumers not to use recalled products. Infant fatalities have been reported while using other inclined sleep products, after the infants rolled from their back to their stomach or side while unrestrained, or under other circumstances. Fisher-Price online at www. ET Monday through Friday for more information. The model number is located on the fabric label inside of the play yard and on the fabric label on the back of the inclined sleeper pad.
The product is a portable play yard with inclined sleeper and changing station clutch accessories and a carry bag; the inclined sleeper accessory is the only portion of the product that is being recalled. Consumers should immediately stop using the inclined sleeper accessory and contact Fisher-Price for a refund or voucher. Consumers can continue to use the play yard portion of the product without the inclined sleeper accessory, and can also continue to use the changing station clutch accessory and carry bag.
The U. Consumer Product Safety Commission CPSC is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death associated with the use of thousands of types of consumer products.

Ultra-Lite Play Yard with Inclined sleeper. This brings the death toll for all inclined sleepers to at least 92, up from 73, the total released in October by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the agency tasked with overseeing thousands of products. Both the CPSC and lawmakers in Congress have proposed banning all infant inclined sleeperswhich position babies at an angle between 10 and 30 degrees.
But while government officials are deliberating, many inclined products advertised for sleep remain on the market, in homes, and in day cares. For many families, the news about the dangers of the products came as a shock.
This lack of clarity about the cause of sleep-related deaths in infants is not unusual, even among physicians and researchers. Other families now reporting deaths also say they only recently learned of the dangers of the products. Most of the families in litigation have filed suits against Fisher-Price, while at least one family has filed a suit against Kids II.
The deaths occurred before the products were recalled. When asked about the fatalities, a spokesperson for Fisher-Price told CR that "as a matter of policy, we cannot comment due to ongoing litigation. A spokesperson for the CPSC said that the agency "routinely assesses incoming incidents as they are reported and takes appropriate action as needed.
But inclined sleepers contradict those long-standing guidelines. The products are not flat, their sidewalls and head support are made of soft bedding, and they have restraint harnesses. That can prompt infants to roll over earlier than they might have been able to manage while on a flat surface. Though the risks may seem apparent nowthere are many reasons parents, doctors, and even medical examiners may not have recognized inclined sleep products as a possible factor in the infant deaths.
For one, sleep-related infant deaths often happen when babies are alone and adults are also asleep, so the exact cause may not be immediately evident.
In addition, there is variability in how infant deaths are classified among states, and even among counties, says Hoffman, at the AAP. In most cases, the medical examiner evaluates the available evidence and makes a judgment call, he says. That perpetuates the mysteries behind infant fatalities and stalls the sharing of safe sleep practices.
Indeed, sleep-related deaths among infants are far more common than many people realize, Hoffman says. An estimated 3, infants younger than 1 die in their sleep each year, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About a quarter of the incidents are attributed to accidental suffocation or strangulation in bed, which means there has been a death scene investigation and autopsy, and there is enough circumstantial evidence for the medical examiner to make that determination.
An additional 38 percent of SUID cases are classified as SIDS, or sudden infant death syndrome, which means that there has been a full investigation and an autopsy but the medical examiner found no clear identifiable cause of death. The designation of SIDS, then, can leave unanswered questions.
As more parents learn of the risks of unsafe sleep products, they are sounding the alarm. I immediately rushed out to my car, called my husband, and drove as fast as I could to her house.Healthy UH. View more from this blog. Many parents love putting their babies in inclined sleepers, those slanted kind of hammocks made of soft material that hang from a frame.
Many of these products can vibrate, blow air or play music, and provide parents the promise of helping a baby fall — and stay — asleep. But these products can be dangerous.
In April, Fisher-Price recalled 4. Some of the infants rolled from their back to their stomach while unrestrained. Babies should be put to bed on their back — alone, unrestrained and on a firm, flat surface without bumpers and other soft bedding, says the AAP and other organizations such as the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau.
Here is what she had to say:. This kind of product keeps a baby inclined, which parents may think helps prevent reflux or spitting up. So people may think their babies sleep a little better in this position, despite medical experts' recommendations.
Inclined-Sleeper Death Toll Rises to 92
The reclining sleepers also keep an infant in one spot, so parents believe they can have a little freedom to move around the house or to relax while the child is in the device. Many of these products come with controls that shine a nightlight, play soft music or rock the baby. One of the real dangers is that babies have poor head control. They can slouch down while sleeping at an incline and tuck their head into their chest. This closes the airway and causes problems with breathing.
If Mom or Dad is watching, they can do something about it. But if no one is around, this could be a serious problem. Many of these products are made of fabric that might look soft and comfortable, but can be dangerous.
If the baby can roll or move around, they can move their face into the side of the sleeper and smother. The biggest risk comes if an infant rolls over in these devices. You never know when your baby is actually going to roll over for the first time.Recall: The Case Against the Infant Inclined Sleeper - Consumer Reports

All Infant Inclined Sleep Products Should Be Recalled, Consumer Reports Says
But despite her efforts and those of the paramedics and hospital staff, Alex could not be revived. Neither the doctors nor the autopsy report offered any explanation. What if I had taken him with me to play Mr. Potato Head? The research and the new CPSC staff proposal reinforce what CR has reported for months and what the American Academy of Pediatrics AAP has stated: There is no such thing as a safe infant inclined sleeper, a product that typically positions an infant at an incline of up to 30 degrees and usually has design elements such as a rounded sleep surface and plush side padding.
The AAP recommends that infants sleep on their backs, alone, unrestrained, on a firm, flat surface, free of padding, bumpers, and other soft bedding. To date, at least 73 infant deaths have been tied to inclined sleepers, as recently as May 2,several weeks after Fisher-Price issued its recall. In fact, between January and May of this year, as both the agency and industry allowed inclined sleepers to remain on the market, at least six babies died in the products, according to incidents cited in the study and lawsuits that have been filed.
To read the latest news on these products, see CR's ongoing coverage of infant inclined sleepers. The study—led by Erin Mannen, Ph. CR is a member of the ASTM committee and attended the meeting, along with other consumer safety groups, representatives from the juvenile product industry, experts from the AAP, and other stakeholders. The CPSC says it commissioned the study about a year ago because it had documented a growing number of injuries and deaths connected to infant inclined sleep products over the past several years, but had no specific research to explain why they had occurred.
The researchers compared that with the movements and oxygen levels of the babies when they were placed on a flat mattress and also on an inclined mattress of varying degrees.
The study found that the design of inclined sleepers allows babies to move very differently from when they are on a firm, flat surface.
And when babies did roll onto their stomachs in the inclined sleepers, they exerted nearly percent more abdominal muscle activity and their oxygen levels dropped twice as much, compared with their activity and oxygen levels when on their stomachs on a flat crib mattress.
This suggests that when babies end up on their stomachs in an inclined sleeper, they can exhaust themselves, and ultimately suffocate, while trying to reposition their heads and bodies so that they can breathe, researchers said.Due to the extraordinary circumstances surrounding COVID, some of the remedies identified in recall press releases may not be available at this time. The additional deaths were reported publicly in the weeks after a Consumer Reports investigation into the dangers posed by the products.
Though Fisher-Price and Kids II have recalled their inclined sleepers, several other manufacturers continue to sell similar products that pose the same risks. Infant inclined sleepers are designed to have babies sleep at an incline between 10 degrees and 30 degrees.
All such products increase the likelihood of airway compression and suffocation, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. These organizations say babies should be put to bed on their back—alone, unrestrained, and on a firm, flat surface free of bumpers and other soft bedding. In April, Fisher-Price recalled all 4. To read the latest news on these products, see CR's ongoing coverage of infant inclined sleepers. And to see which sleepers have been recalled, see CR's list, which will be updated as needed.
A document released by the CPSC last week says that 50 deaths have been linked to rockerlike inclined sleepers. Beyond those 50 deaths, the Nap Nanny, a nonrocking inclined sleeper, was linked to six deathswith the first death and product recall occurring in The product was fully recalled in Despite these numbers, several other manufacturers—including Baby Delight, Evenflo, and Hiccapop—still sell inclined sleep products.
And the CPSC has not taken action against those products, even though medical evidence highlights the dangers that inclined sleepers pose. When CR asked the CPSC whether it had any updated advice on whether babies should sleep in inclined sleep products and whether the agency had taken any new action related to inclined sleepers, the agency declined to comment.
The CPSC has left the future of inclined sleepers to ASTM International, an organization that brings manufacturers, government officials, medical experts, consumers, and others together to establish voluntary industry standards for thousands of products and processes.
CR is a member and participates in working groups, including the subcommittee for infant inclined sleep products. He notes that when Fisher-Price and others introduced inclined sleepers a decade ago, they did not have to provide evidence that the products were safe for sleep.
While industry and the CPSC delay, some members of Congress are introducing legislation to stop the sale of inclined sleepers. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn. Many parents have long believed not only that inclined sleepers are safe but also that they help babies who seem to suffer from frequent spit-up, also known as reflux. But experts say that sleeping at an incline is not helpful for babies with reflux.
And numerous studies have shown that sleeping on an incline—whether in a sleeper, car seat, or bouncer seat, and especially when restrained—poses several serious risks. Further, research shows that restraints, such as those in inclined sleepers, increase the risk of strangulation and entrapment. He explains that babies are meant to wake up throughout the night, especially within the first four to six months. And it seems to be what happened in all four of the deaths described in the latest lawsuit, filed June 12 by the firms Wolf Haldenstein and Blank Rome against Fisher-Price and its parent company, Mattel.
In one of those deaths, Amanda Butler of Crossroads, Ala. When Amanda woke around 9 a. Emergency medical technicians at the house and emergency room staff in the hospital tried, but failed, to resuscitate Arya, the lawsuit alleges. The company never conducted a thorough medical analysis or commissioned independent third-party testing to establish whether it was safe for infants to sleep at a degree incline.
The documents show that as Fisher-Price developed its product, the only medical expert the company consulted was Gary Deegear, M. Deegear stated pediatricians recommend babies with reflux sleep at 30 degrees, this is just fine, or sleep in a car seat overnight for months or even a year.Check out these tips to find ways to make your garage more organized and better to use.
