AMD Ryzen 7 4800U/4700U laptops – specs, benchmarks and complete list of devices
Next Last. Nearby Costco locations:. Throw in another 8G RAM and we get ourselves a laptop. This could be your desktop replacement. I would bite, I really would. But I worry about thermal throttling when gaming on these things. Contemplating on whether the extra warranty is worth it.
Only bad thing about this laptop is the display isnt And of course 16gb would have been nice. I recall someone mentioning the fragile hinges on the Envy x, and HP not covering them under warranty as a faulty design.
Dammit, I was hoping the Ryzen 5 model came back, but this is awfully tempting. It's more than I wanted to spend, so I'm thinking I might stick with the Flex 5. The Flex 5 has the power switch on the outside so I can press it without having to open the screen each time, whereas this one has the power button in the keyboard.
Do you open the lid each time? Says Bilingual keyboard. Looks pretty english to me.
I shot first and asking questions later. Anyone know the screen details on this such as how many nits? Edit looks like the dock has usb power in, so maybe this laptop also accepts usb c charge. If it turns out to be bilingual though opposite of what the photos show I'll be returning and keeping the 14" flex instead. Last edited by indeals on Jun 10th, pm, edited 1 time in total. L Grand Master. L3: Novice.AMD has been making some early waves this year with its new Ryzen Mobile series of processors.
These are the first generation of laptop CPUs that, in theory, compete with Intel on price and performance. It is, quite arguably, the best budget laptop ofperiod. Here's why. The low price, excellent performance, and overall premium-feeling design make it easy to recommend as the best budget 2-in-1 around.
We recently named the Spectre x 13 the best value for a premium convertible, but that was before this new ENVY hit the scene. While some of the components — like display, storage, thermals, and audio — are not as high-end, the overall experience of ENVY is punching above its weight. Only the SSD is technically user-upgradable, but HP does not make it easy to remove the laptop's bottom as the screws are hidden behind the rubber feet.
Still, it can be done with some effort. There are display options that vary on brightness abilities and the addition of HP's coveted Sure View privacy display which also has the benefit of approaching 1, nits of brightness.
At Brightness ranges from a peak of nits to just 22 nits when the display is set to zero. The relatively thin display bezels and decent contrast ratio give a pleasant appeal and clean look. The only real downside is this is a very glossy display no anti-reflective layerbut that is expected at this price.
Above the display is a decent web camera. But what makes it fantastic is the physical shutter cover that sits behind the bezel. Instead of users physically sliding a door crude, but usefula simple press on the dedicated keyboard enables the shutter. Once turned on, users know it is working because a white screen now blocks the camera, and a small orange LED on the keyboard makes it visible.
This is the first time I have seen this camera design, and it is marvelous. The ENVY x is fantastic for what you get.
It looks cool, and it's a great performer for everyday tasks. A similar situation applies to the microphones. A small LED lets you know that mic is muted, making it ideal for meetings or just to ensure privacy.
Ports are decent for this price level. For power, there is a watt barrel charger in the box. While I don't favor proprietary chargers, it makes sense here since there is only one Type-C port used for power, which cuts down on utility. Of course, being a Type-C with Power Delivery 3. HP uses a familiar chicklet-style keyboard layout that is edge to edge.
Typically, on budget-friendly laptops, the keyboard is compromised, but that's not the case here. Two-stage backlighting lets you see the keys at night, and while the white LED is a step down from HP's premium, the lighting here is still very good with clear contrast.Announced today and arriving throughout May and June, the refreshed clamshells and 2-in-1s focus on battery life and the ability to juggle multiple creative workloads.
Additionally, HP is refreshing its clamshell Envy laptops. The Envy x 13 opts for the Ryzen 7 U, which packs eight CPU cores and eight threads no simultaneous multithreading with a base clock speed of 2. AMD claims improved battery life with its series APUs compared to predecessors, and Intel also touts the battery life gains of its Ice Lake architecture. With integrated graphics, the Envy xs pack less of a graphical punch than the clamshells, but they have a greater focus on mobility.
With an iH 6 cores, 12 threads at 2. This includes using a vapor chamber solution for keeping cooling efficient and compact, HP Dynamic Power for allocating power for the CPU or GPU based on the current workload and an infrared thermopile sensor.
HP is specifically going after prosumers with the Envy -- like video bloggers and editors, photographers and graphic designers -- as well as professionals, developers, photographers, designers and architects with greater focus on emerging tech like XR, 3D, AI and simulation. By this point, many Apple fans have likely gotten used to dealing with dongles.

Unlike most business laptops or gaming laptops, inexpensive consumer laptops are generally more difficult for end-users to service. After all, these types of users are less likely to be tech savvy and manufacturers would rather charge buyers extra for specific upgrades instead.
The latest HP Envy x 15 convertible is a great example of the lengths OEMs would go to to discourage end-user tinkering. Firstly, owners will need two types of screwdrivers just to remove the bottom panel: a Philips screwdriver and a torx wrench. Next, almost all of the eight screws are tucked underneath the rubber feet on the bottom of the laptop. The feet are glued onto the laptop and it's both easy to damage them and difficult to place them back perfectly.
Once all the screws are removed, a sharp edge will be needed to carefully pry the edges and front corners of the bottom panel. Once the panel is removed, you're still not done. It's not the worst example we've seen as a few laptops require flipping the motherboard upside-down just to upgrade the RAM, but it still feels like overkill on a consumer convertible like the HP Envy x 15 series. Not only are the bottom panels sharp and difficult to remove, but screws are frequently hidden underneath glued rubber feet to discourage simple RAM or storage upgrades.
